Mr. Whalen’s career began in 1980 as a research director and then administrator of IUOE Local 675’s pension fund in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Since then he has held various positions at mortgage/commercial real estate investment banking firms, including the predecessor to HFF. For the past 12 years preceding his joining at Ackman-Ziff, Mr. Whalen operated as an independent financial adviser at Whalen Realty Capital, which he founded. In addition to commercial real estate banking, Mr. Whalen co-founded LienBase, a firm which acquires and services tax lien certificates nationally.
Mr. Whalen has transacted in excess of $2.5 billion in commercial real estate sales and financing. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from SUNY Oneonta and a master’s degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University.
